I've never been a girly-girl, but I've always wanted a place to put my make up on and get ready in the evening. I have a tiny Brooklyn bathroom, with bad light and no space. Also, only having one bathroom, it's inconsiderate to take it up putting on makeup.
My solution was rather than buying a vanity, I'd make one that takes up less room and fits perfectly in my left-over space. I had this unused spot between my back windows. Because of the radiator, it was pretty much useless space. I took a cheap ikea shelf, and mounted it over the radiator (with enough space so it doesn't get too hot in the winter), just the right height for sitting at. Next I hung this west-elm deep mirror, that created a second mini-shelf for my perfumes. I hung a small hook by the mirror for my jewelry, and one underneigh to hang my blow-dryer. I fount this birch swivel stool from ikea, and painted the top green to give it a bit more personality.
The real ah-ha moment came when I took these big-bulb string lights from Target and wound them around the mirror. Now I have great even light to put my makeup on. Love it!
All in all, I think I probably spent about $90 to make vanity space that fits perfectly in my bedroom. Not bad :)
